Two weeks ago, I was going through a difficult time. In addition to feeling heaviness and some grief, my kitchen was torn apart-I had no appliances, my house was under renovations, and boxes were still piled high in my office. I decided it was definitely a morning to work at a cafe.
I arrived at the bright, cozy, and inviting Woodrack cafe. As I waited at the counter to order, a cheerful barista glanced my way. “I’ll be right with you, love.” When she came to the counter she had such a warm, genuine smile I felt it deeply- it went right into my heart space.
“Thank-you for the smile, I said as she took my order. “I’ve had a difficult couple of days, and it is exactly what I needed.”
She lit up even more. “I’ll put some extra love in your latte this morning” she replied with kindness in her eyes.
I sat down in a corner by the window. Feeling moved I immediately started to write when Kristy delivered the latte to my table along with a complimentary cookie as the morning sun streamed in. And the difficult, heavy emotions dissipated in the presence of the sun and the warm smile of a stranger.
Today I returned to share with Kristy how her smile lifted me on that day and how truly grateful I am for the warmth and kindness she gave. And the power of reciprocity was felt as I shared my gift with her, an exchange of heartfelt words and a simple card, You inspired me today.
Thank-you Kristy for your uplifting smile. The warmth still emanates today.
